What’s Inari sushi?
Inari sushi is a Japanese food that is vinegar rice wrapped with Aburaage.
It is called ”Oinari-san” or “Oinari” as well.
Inari sushi has been popular since the Edo period.
There are some theories, but one of them says the beginning of Inari sushi is an offer at Inari jinja (shrine). Somebody put rice into Aburaage which was an offer and it became Inari sushi.
I don’t know if the theory is really true, but I want to thank the person who invented this food.
Inari sushi is simple, but so tasty and satisfies me.
This time, I will tell you how to make basic Inari sushi.
So even if you don’t live in Japan, you can try it!
I think you can get the ingredients at Japanese supermarkets!

For vinegar rice
Rice 2 cups
Water 2 cups
Kombu 10 cm
Rice vinegar 1/4 cups
Sugar 2 Tablespoons
Salt 1/2 Tablespoon
Water 1 cup
Sake 1/2 cup
Sugar 5 Tablespoons
Soy sauce 5 Tablespoons
Mirin 1 Tablespoon
For decoration, I used “Beni shoga”!
It is ginger-dyed pink.
How to make Inari sushi
First, cook rice with Kombu.
When the rice is done, add vinegar liquid (vinegar, sugar, salt) and stir it well.
I added sesame and boiled carrots for more color and nutrition.
Hit aburaage with a rolling pin and boil them in water for 15 minutes.
While you are boiling Aburaage, let’s prepare seasoning liquid!
Put sake and water and sugar in a pot and boil it for 10 minutes.
After that, add soy sauce and when it starts boiling, put mirin and boil it for 2-3 more minutes.
Drain the water of Aburaage and transfer them into the liquid seasoning, and boil them until the liquid almost disappears.
Cut the Aburaage half.
Open the Aburaage carefully and put the rice into it.
I usually make rice bolls first and put them inside the Aburaage.
I think it’s the easiest way!
Beni-shoga (ginger) is not a necessary item, but it goes well with Inari sushi.
And it looks so cute!
