If you are interested in Japanese culture or handicraft, you might have heard about “Sashiko stitch”.
This time, I tried to do Sashiko after a long time!
(Last time when I did Sashiko was when I was an elementary school kid!)
So I’d like to talk about my Sashiko experience.
What’s Japanese Sashiko stitch?
“Sashiko stitch” is traditional handcraft in Japan.
Sashiko stitch culture started about 500 years ago (Edo period).
In the beginning, people started this to strengthen fabric.
Nowadays, people are enjoying Sashiko stitch for decoration.
At craft stores, you can find a lot of special threads for Sashiko.
You can also find “Fukin” (dish towels)” with Sashiko design.
This fabric already has Sashiko stitch print on it, so you just need to sew on top of the line.
I bought this Sashiko “fukin” recently. This pattern is called “Seigaiha”. （Blue waves）
This will be a gift for my husband when I finish stitching.
My Sashiko trial! I tried Asanoha pattern
This was my first Sashiko stitch trial after a long time.
And I chose Asanoha pattern because it’s one of Japanese traditional pattern and I love it.
This time, I drew Asanoha pattern myself.
For that, I used this useful tailor’s chalk.
This looks like a pen, but the line will disappear in a few days.
Also, it will disappear if you wash the fabric.

After you finish drawing the pattern, you just need to sew.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures while I was sewing.
Because I was concentrating on Sashiko stitch soooo much…
I couldn’t take a picture, but here is my work.
This is my first trial of Asanoha patterned Sashiko stitch.
It’s not perfect, but I did my best!
I think this Sashiko thread made this “fukin” look much prettier.
The thread I used is “OLYMPUS Sashiko thread 53”.
I really like the gradation pink color.
I think this thread is perfect when you try Sakura pattern as well.

Japanese Sashiko stitch is so much fun!
Sashiko stitch experience was so great.
It took an entire day to finish this, but it was a great time.
Before I started, I was a bit worried because I didn’t know if I can finish this.
But concentrating on stitching was really luxurious time, and I thought I should do Sashiko stitch more often.
Sashiko stitch might be my new hobby!
